Timeline PhotosHigh SPF sunscreens not only over-promise protection but they can also over-expose you to UVA rays that increase your risk of skin cancer.
__
Basically anything over SPF 50 is not doing you any additional benefit. Properly applied SPF 50 sunscreen blocks 98% of UVB rays, SPF 100 blocks only 1% more. Sunscreen with SPF between 30 and 50 offer adequate protection even for people most sensitive to sunburning. You’re NOT doubling your protection by doubling your SPF!
__
The chemicals used to make an SPF are aimed at blocking UVB rays. UVB rays cause sunburn and non-melanoma skin cancers. UVA rays on the other hand penetrate our skin deeper and suppress our immune systems leading to harmful free radical formation and melanoma risk! SPF has barely any affect on UVA ray protection. In fact the higher the SPF the more it prevents UVB in proportion to UVA protection.
__
When tested some sunscreens claiming to have SPF 100 actually only had 37 to 75. The UV light used in labs to make these products differs from real sun conditions and therefore the SPF values are very misleading.
__
The higher the SPF the more concentrations of the harmful chemicals used to prevent sun damage (see last post for details). Your best option is to use sunscreen with 30 SPF and find a natural sunscreen that doesn’t have any of the harmful chemicals listed in the previous post!
